Silostore, Whitechurch Farms: A century of farming meets modern innovation
Silostore, Whitechurch Farms: A century of farming meets modern innovation
Located in Grenfell, NSW, on a picturesque 1100-hectare property, the Whitechurch family farm with nearly 100 years of history has seamlessly integrated tradition with innovation. Specialising in Merino sheep farming and with crop rotations of wheat, canola and barley, this farm showcases the adaptability and resilience of modern agriculture. Central to their operations is the Silostore Silo from CSG Composites, a fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) silo, a game changing investment for their fertiliser silo storage needs.
The Silostore is located on their farm “Booroola” and the farm where the family has been for 6 generations is “Wendouree”, where Kim and Jennie’s son Ashley lives with his wife Roslyn and their two boys.
Challenges with steel storage in agriculture
Kim and Jennie Whitechurch, the owners of Whitechurch Farm, had been using some temporary solutions to store their fertilisers. They were looking to find a reliable, long- lasting solution for storing their liquid and dry fertilisers. They needed something that was durable, didn’t rust or corrode, and offered easy maintenance and longevity.
“Before adopting Silostore, we used a steel galvanised transportable bin for a silo, which had several issues. It had a short lifespan due to being prone to rust and corrosion”, said Kim Whitechurch, the farmer and owner of Whitechurch Farm.
“There are other steel silos or poly type silos we could have used, but they don’t have the lifespan of a fibreglass reinforced plastic silo. This Silostore will easily last another 50 years, so its great value for money. 97 years of farming teaches you that it’s better to buy quality in the first place – it may cost more but it costs less in the long run”, said Kim.
With plans to improve efficiency and storage longevity, Whitechurch Farm sought a more durable and versatile solution.
Why Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic Silostore is a great solution for agriculture
After exploring their options, Whitechurch Farms decided to partner with CSG Composites to design, manufacture, and install a 37.5 cubic metre FRP Silostore. It also included an adaptable fitting on the outlet for easy interchange of liquid or granular fertiliser. Its innovative design addresses their key challenges and provides many benefits over steel or aluminium silos.
Anti Corrosive: FRP Silostore offers unmatched resistance to rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity and reliability when storing dry and liquid fertilisers.
Versatility for liquid and dry storage: FRP allows for easy interchangeability for storing both dry and liquid fertilisers, although at Whitechurch Farm it is primarily suited for dry storage.
Low Maintenance: With a smooth, glass like interior, cleaning is minimal, and outflow of the product is seamless.
Easy installation and maintenance
In just two hours, a crane-assisted setup transformed the farm’s storage capabilities, with a quick and easy installation of the Silostore. The CSG Composites team also installed the precast concrete base, reducing the overall installation cost for the customer.
CSG Composite’s responsive support during the initial setup ensured a smooth transition, addressing any minor challenges with professionalism and expertise.
How Silostore has performed at Whitechurch Farms
Since its installation in March 2022, Silostore has delivered outstanding results for Whitechurch Farm.
“Silostore has performed really well since installation. We have made some customisations and the team at CSG Composites have been responsive to helping us out with these,” said Kim.
“The product outflow of the Silostore has been great. The resin finish on the inside is a glass like so nothing sticks to it. It’s really easy to clean, you can just hose it down. Due to the FRP design, it won’t rust or corrode,” said Kim.
“I would definitely recommend Silostore to other agricultural businesses. The FRP silos are built to last and the team at CSG Composites are very experienced with the resins. I’m really happy with the Silostore,” said Kim.
Designed to withstand the rigours of farm life, Silostore is expected to outlast other storage alternatives, making it a great investment for the long-term future of Whitechurch Farm. Silostore has become as essential part of the farm’s operations, offering an efficient solutions for fertiliser storage.
